When is a ROCK not a ROCK?
Posted Monday, May 31, at 7:51 PM
Growing up in the Ozarks, I am very familiar with ROCKS. Oh yes, we have got rocks in these here hills. Lots and lots of rocks and they're usually where we do not want them -- like underneath the lawnmower blades.

Rocks are what usually keeps a vegetable or flower garden from being built -- unless you haul in some dirt and build it ABOVE the rocks.

Rocks seem to grow in this area. I have one area in my yard that no matter how many years I have spent picking up and raking rocks, they always reappear.

I'm sure I am just one of many, many parents who have used rocks -- or the picking up of rocks -- as a great form of punishment and discipline. I think it was used very effectively as my 3 sons grew up. They got exercise, had time to reflect on whatever they were being punished for, and today, I have a BEAUTIFUL country yard to show for it.

My boys "swore" that they would never pick up another rock once they became adults. Maybe they haven't, but I know at least one of these sons have used the same form of discipline with his 2 sons. Aaaaah, the legacy continues.

Now, I have discovered that these rocks, these dang-gum rocks that have been cursed for years, are actually worth MONEY! Believe it or not, people will actually pay you to pick up these rocks and haul them away. I haven't actually collected any of that money -- it just seems so wrong -- but they are willing to pay and that just blows me away.

For many years, friends visiting from out of the state, usually from up north somewhere, have asked if they could take a few rocks home with them. We have always agreed, with a little laugh, and encouraged them to take ALL they want.

Just this weekend a friend borrowed our 4-wheeler and small trailer and drove it to the edge of the woods and picked up enough rocks to fill the bed of the trailer to take back to Neosho, Mo., to use in his landscaping business. People are actually going to give him money for our rocks. Go figure -- but then, did you ever think you'd pay for water?

He told us that city folks are willing to pay big money to give their landscape that natural look, and you can't get much more natural than rocks, I guess. He told us we were sitting on a gold mine.

You know, if I was 30 years younger and my 3 sons were still at home (hee hee) I might consider this as being a ground-breaking (no pun intended) business. But at my age, my knees, my back, my shoulders, my hands, etc. etc., just do not bend towards the ground as easily as they once did.

Now, I'm just depressed. All those years when we made our boys pitch those rocks in the woods, we could have been building our retirement account. Oh well, what is they say about hindsight?

Surprise Surprise
Posted Sunday, August 2, at 9:51 PM

I got up early this morning, started my coffee, spoke to the cat through the door and went about my morning chores as usual. Didn't notice anything different. Then, my son walks through the kitchen and glances out at the cat and says, "Mom, your cat has three new kittens." Talk about blowing me over. I didn't have a clue that the little mama was expecting. I was still trying to find the time to schedule her a vet appointment. So, surprise, surprise. That cat's done it again...

Gone on workcation!
Posted Wednesday, June 24, at 5:42 PM

I'm on workcation. You know, one of those breaks you take from your regular job to catch up on things you've let slide at home. Yes, I will have to go back to work at my real job soon just to rest! I started with a list that kept growing to the point it finally just disappeared...

Judge not -- but we do anyway
Posted Saturday, June 6, at 11:37 PM

I know I should never judge another person and the way they may or not be living their life. I haven't walked in that person's shoes and have no idea what their life is like, or why. I guess it's human nature to "compare" others actions to our own and sometimes feel superior because we think our choices have been better than someone elses...

What's gonna dry up next?
Posted Sunday, May 31, at 9:35 PM

Is it just me, or does everybody's feet start to get uglier as we age? My husband has always told me I have the ugliest feet in the world, but he's wrong. He's just trying to make himself feel better, because I know that man's feet ain't nothing to brag about!...

It's good to be a woman
Posted Monday, May 25, at 9:11 PM

My favorite time of day is early morning, when I don't have to be anywhere and can just take my time waking up and enjoying my home and the beautiful view from my deck. I like to take my coffee and sometimes a blanket and curl up in a chair and just watch and listen. The morning sounds are calming and filled with chatter of birds and squirrels starting their day...

I've turned into one of those drivers
Posted Sunday, May 10, at 9:58 PM

I'm not a road rage kind of person. Oh sure, I get irritated with my fellow drivers sometimes, but I don't get fired up the way some people do. If I'm in a hurry, I will always get behind a slow moving vehicle or a school bus making upteen stops (Murphy's Law) but, I don't scream and yell and beat the steering wheel. I just watch the clock and hope the vehicle in front of me turns ... soon...

Your working family
Posted Sunday, May 3, at 9:28 PM

Have you ever noticed how comfortable co-workers get with each other? Of course, there's going to be a few you simply will never be able to like (probably because they're too much like yourself) but most co-workers not only tolerate each other -- they actually grow to like each other...

Pollen colored hair
Posted Wednesday, April 29, at 12:01 AM

There are so many changes going on in my life right now, sometimes I wonder which way is up. First of all is the change in the color of everything in my house -- everything is yellow. From the tables, to the floors, windows, furniture, appliances, and everything else in between, there is a fine layer of yellow pollen clinging to everything. ...

This one's for the girls
Posted Wednesday, April 15, at 11:04 PM

For women only OK. I went in for my yearly wellness exam today. Whoopie! Something women everywhere dread with every fiber of their body. Probably because every fiber of their body gets poke, prodded, squeazed and swabbed. I have a great doctor (a woman) I go to for these exams. She has a compassionate manner and understands this exam like a man could never understand...

We're yard-salers
Posted Saturday, April 4, at 9:22 PM

Who says you can't afford to have fun in this economy? I had a great time today, spent about $15, and made a morning of memories with my 5-year-old granddaughter. We went garage-selling! Saturday was the Spring city wide yard sale for Salem and I was lucky enough to have my granddaughter spend the night at my house. We decided to get up bright and early and head out to find bargains -- we love bargains!...

A song for smokers and tax haters
Posted Friday, March 27, at 9:02 PM

A songwriter I may not be, but I HATE taxes and I hate seeing them raised on ANYTHING that I haven't had a vote on. So, smokers and tax haters, this song's for you. Just remember, if it doesn't make sense, it was written by a menopausal redhead! (To the tune of "Santa Claus is coming to town.") It gets better once it ends ......

Rude Awakening
Posted Sunday, March 22, at 8:58 PM

If the movies portrayed people the way they REALLY look when they wake up in the mornings, the movies wouldn't be very glamorous, would they? Except for my wedding night, and a few weeks after, and possibly when I've been in the hospital, I don't put a lot of thought into what I sleep in. As long as it's comfortable and keeps me warm or cool, it can be anything...

Directionally Challenged
Posted Saturday, March 7, at 8:45 PM

My dad use to say if he couldn't give me directions by saying, "Go to the end of the street where the trash can is and turn right," I wouldn't be able to get there. My husband's always been mystified that I really can't tell which way is north, south, east and west. ...

Angel Wings
Posted Sunday, March 1, at 6:12 PM

A while back, my granddaughter was sitting beside me in church. I looked down at her and smiled. She smiled back and then leaned towards me and whispered, "Grandma, you have angel wings on your face." She then traced my laugh lines and wrinkles. Getting older really doesn't bother me, but sometimes I look in the mirror and do a double-take. I don't feel like I should look like that. In my mind, I still see myself with red hair, full lips, thick eyebrows and no wrinkles...

I'm back

You haven't heard from me in so long I bet you're wondering if I've reached my weight goal or if I'm just a round little woman who wobbles when she walks. Actually, I think it's somewhere in between, but I have lost 20+ pounds and feel great. No more Jenny but staying very busy which may just be the secret behind the weight loss...

Day ONE
Posted Friday, August 8, at 1:57 PM

8-8-08 -- Day 1: I did my measurements -- bust, waist, abdomen and hips and stepped on the scales to record my OFFICIAL weight. How depressing! For the first time in my life I have an impressive bust size and it's all fat. And, what's worse, my stomach and hips are so much bigger, my bustline is lost in this strange-looking silhouette. I'm just glad I didn't take these measurements before I lost the 12 pounds. I really don't want to know what they were back then...

The food arrives
Posted Friday, August 8, at 11:45 AM

8-7-08 -- Thursday: My food arrived today (straight to my door) and almost everything sounds pretty good. I don't care for the shelf-stable pre-packaged foods, so almost all of my entrees are frozen. There are pizzas, muffins, cheesecake, chocolate cake, mac & cheese, broccoli & cheese, stuffed potato and a whole lot more. ...

Getting ready
Posted Friday, August 8, at 11:39 AM

8-6-08 -- Wednesday: I spent today cleaning out my refrigerator, freezer and cabinets. Some things got thrown away and others were sent downstairs to the freezer -- out of sight, out of mind. My husband was informed (nicely) that I was doing Jenny Craig for a month and he was going to be participating in an "alternative eating style." He wasn't quite sure what that was (neither was I, but I didn't want to tell him he was going on a diet) but he was willing to go along with my plan. ...
