New events at the Speedway
Posted Monday, May 31, at 10:07 PM
The New owners of the New West Plains Speedway are bringing some new action and you might enjoy some change.
This Friday, June 4th, the First Demolition Derby will premier and the first place prize is $1000.00. Special events that evening include the Extreme Monster Car Crusher and Mod Lite race cars that will be running on Saturday Night, but on display Friday night. The Mod Lites were previously called Dwarf Cars and are powered by 1000 cc motorcycle motors and have a body shaped like a full size modified. The Mod Lites are actual 5/8 scale and can go just as fast. The owners are expecting a few of the original Dwarf cars and they have the model T shaped bodies. The Derby will be the prelude to the possible Mega derby in October, where more than 200 cars could be expected. On Saturday the 5th it will be another exciting evening on the 3/8 mile clay oval and the Frost Family has adopted Don Gibson's track preparation methods and have made him proud. It appears from the Fan's forums that the previous great race isn't as great if it's not in West Plains. I can't say for sure as I was not in Wheatland, but I do trust the opinion of the #21 Driver. Saturday night's program includes Late Models, Mod Lites, IMCA Modifieds, Hobbys, Youth Hobbys, and Cruisers. The food is great the action is fast and the Kids might enjoy the Purple People Eater! Go to www.westplains-speedway.com for more information.
Danger in temper control Of course I talk about racing and the outdoors, and I will, but something happened recently that reminds me of how important it is to have permission to HUNT or FISH on private property. I don't know what it was all about, but if it had anything to do with land and access, a young man and a husband and dad are all one person who is DEAD. ...
Crowds pick up at WPMS The crowd is growing at the West Plains Motor Speedway and you can't complain about the weather. Once again the competition was incredible and the cruiser class was a great example. Tyler Newcom of Hardy has two in a row and not with out some competition from Bozo in the 00 El Camino, and a big crash on the front straightway that sent Rhonda Gunter of Moody to the Hospital, and a black flag for the Rage'n Cajun. ...
A week without racing? I couldn't help myself!!! Even though I didn't make it to a speedway, I did go to a go-cart track with my grandsons and the newest dad in my family. My youngest son Joel became a dad for the first time and he and Leslie had a beautiful baby girl. Nixa is a better place for it and grandpa is sure proud. Now I'm sure that Grandma Erma is glowing so much that the newspapers are radio active...
Tragedy strikes everywhere Trials and Tragedy can strike anywhere and anytime, but it's never easy. This Saturday night as I'm working at the races the news comes pouring in and just kept coming. While we are all preparing for the 3 day Modified special this coming weekend, the news started with a notice that my announcer friend at Mountain Home was taking care of his wife in the hospital in Springfield after she was seriously injured went a semi ran a red light and T-boned his daughter's new car. ...
A weekend without races The Heart of the Ozarks Fair is a no races weekend at the West Plains Motor Speedway, but it fires back up on the 25th of July and then is followed by a three day Race on the last 2 days of the month and August first. It's the Open Wheeled Modified Show-Me Championship. ...
Racing and baseball This week was a busy one and I had a lot on my plate, but getting it done means a lot to blog about. Someone has to do these things and it's a lot more people than me. It seems that there is something for everyone to do for others and there is satisfaction in doing things for others benefits...
Firecracker weekend the best This Fourth of July weekend is my favorite special event at the West Plains Motor Speedway. What's special? The Super Stock Firecracker 40 lap feature on Saturday was after the incredible Air Magic Fireworks dedication to Veterans of all branches of the Military. ...
Hot weather and Hot Racing! Everything was HOT this last week and that included me! I took 3 days off from radio and worked on a Garage Sale and spent time with my Grandsons too. We only got to go fishing once and it was HOT, but I did get to teach them how to use a bait caster and a spinning reel according to their age. They actually did very well, but it was a good thing we were on the lake...
Who's in charge at the races? Not many weeks go by that someone doesn't ask me who's in charge or who made this or that decision. Well at the West Plains Motor Speedway the buck stops with Dennis Burton. Dennis lives in Sharp County, Arkansas and works for the Arkansas Department of Community Corrections as a Probation and Parole Officer for the past 17 years. Dennis is a husband, father, and grandpa and like me, loves that grandpa stuff...
The Weekends Never Slow Down I am just too busy for my own good, but it is worth it. Friday night when I got home my Grandsons were there and that is always good and we went to bed early for the next day was huge, and we all knew it. At 5:30 am we were getting ready to go to the free fishing derby at the trout hatchery ponds at dam 3. ...
Whew! Unbelievable I have never seen such racing in one night in my life! All but one class had the ultimate winner challenged up to the last lap or even the last turn. It all started with the Youth Hobby Class and a young man that normally won't even start on the pole even if he draws it, lead strongly for about six laps of ten and was challenged by one of the strongest racers in the field and held steady and fought off the advances even after a 3 car pile up involving 2 past feature winners and another top two finisher. ...
Losing your fishing buddy Not too long after coming home from the Races Saturday night it happened. I lost my fishing buddy. He was a skilled fisherman, a gentleman, and a faithful friend. Yes that stinking cancer took another one and it leaves us always wandering who is next. ...
The Unbelievable Week I know most of you are expecting a report on the Show-Me 100 and you will get one. But this week also included the Harris Family Reunion and a very unexpected happening. Monday morning as I stopped at York's Shoe Repair in West Plains, my half brother stopped by when he saw me to visit a few minutes. ...
Daytona on Dirt If the Daytona 500 is the Kings Race of NASCAR, then the Show-Me 100 would be the parallel event on Dirt. Because the TV coverage on Dirt Racing is in it's infant stages, the notoriety of events in the class of the Show-Me 100 is only renown in the circles of the Dirt Race Fans. The realityof the numbers indicate that the largest spectator sport in America is Short Track Auto Racing. It's amazing to me that so many people don't get it!...
Racing for the Dream Dirt track racing has been at least the beginning of the dream for many a young man and very few girls. Boys can have other dreams, like my grandson told me the other day on the way to baseball practice, that he was going to buy grandpa the nicest pontoon boat you could buy when he's playing center field for the Cardinals. Now that's a dream...
A history of 5 families After last week's blog, I decided that an outdoor history story would be fun. This is the kind of story you would tell on a fishing trip and I hope you enjoy it. This is a true story, but the names have been changed to protect the guilty. The story begins on a Hot and Humid July 4th 1974. ...
The Best Times Well it was a busy weekend for me and I got to enjoy my 55th birthday with friends and family. The races were exceptional and with 3 new feature winners, including a youth hobby driver that won the feature on his first ever time to drive in a race. ...
More Spring and more to do Saturday night at the speedway a friend shared 2 photos of crappie that were in the 2 to 3 pound class and made me just a little jealous. But life is what it is and I'll have to suffer thru all the fun I'm not getting to have and settle for all the fun I am having. As I always say, "It's tough all over."...
Second week of racing The second week of racing at the West Plains Motor Speedway was exciting as the first and totally different. The easterly wind on Easter weekend proved a factor as the track got dry and turned black in just a few laps. The competition remained close as some drivers prefer this type of surface. ...
