The Best Times

Posted Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at 8:52 PM

Well it was a busy weekend for me and I got to enjoy my 55th birthday with friends and family. The races were exceptional and with 3 new feature winners, including a youth hobby driver that won the feature on his first ever time to drive in a race. Lane has been after his dad to let him drive and when he finally did it was magic. Imagine being a 14 year old boy that is driving a real stock car for the first time and wins the feature. If you could see through his eyes you really wouldn't recognize anything. Way to go Lane!

If you don't know it by now, my true love in the outdoors is fishing. Saturday I took my best uncle and a cousin by marriage. The catch is that those guys are 20+ years older than me, and the great part is the stories. They have accumulated 20 more years of experiences and events in their lives, some are together and some separate. The best part about fishing trips is the storytelling. Truly those stories are history. So what if they are embellished a little. What parts of literary history is not embellished. You know that the telling of stories is how young men learn about growing in manhood and developing family traits. The early history of Indians in America and even in movies or documentaries is filled with the story telling scenes. And so it is in my family on both sides. Whether you're young like me and only in your 50s or even younger, listen to the stories and remember them. History is the telling of stories, so be a part of it and pass them along. Most of them will honor someone who loved you.

The fishing was slow and in respect to the law, we thru back the 9 inch crappie. But the best part was the stories.

My next trip will be taking my grandsons fishing on one or more of our favorite lakes in Horseshoe Bend. So wave if you see us and maybe share a story or two. Fishing is still in the spring pattern and the bass should be spawning in the 65 degree water and soon the large female blue gills or sunfish will be spawning too. This recent rain will create new food sources near the shore so don't hesitate to throw topwater baits and shallow running baits. Good Luck and God Bless.

I bet you wish you could just retire and spend the days on the water and the nights at the Speedway. That would be quite a life. Too bad it doesn't pay the bills. You must have a wonderful, understanding wife to let you enjoy this every weekend.
