As we enter the latest day of oppressive heat and extreme heat warnings, I find myself ever more amazed at our great-grandparents who survived all of this without the benefit of air conditioning. I can't even begin to imagine what that was like.
Here on our little piece of the Ozarks woods, we have set up an ingenious little contraption that creates a water misting system, using hose, nozzles, a 10x10 easy-up canopy and well water. Have I mentioned before how handy the Marine is?
And let me tell you - it's wonderful! It's so wonderful, even the dogs anxiously wait underneath the canopy when they see us head for the faucet to start the hose to the system.
Granted, a swim in the river is even better, especially since the spring seeps ensure that it stays a nice, refreshing cool temperature, but to be able to walk to the back of the cabin, turn a faucet and really cool off - now that's something.
Of course, another air conditioner for inside the cabin wouldn't hurt either, but we're trying to keep our expenses in check, and electricity rates are just going through the roof. So for now, our little misting station will be a main way we keep our cool, at least til this latest heat wave breaks.
