No More Treats. Please!!!!!

I really enjoyed the holiday season but I can barely express how happy I am it is over! I have decided, as much fun as it offered, the days before Christmas and up to New Years are hazardous to our (or at least my) health.

At work, treats started showing up in the kitchen early in the month and day. A plate of peanut brittle beckoning at eight a.m. A tray of brownies. A pile of cookies. More and more temptations, day after day. I always resolved to be strong and pass them by but usually decided it would be rude not to sample my coworkers' creations. For some reason on our pot luck days, there always seem to be twice as many desserts as "real food".

At home, there were cakes and other foods to be baked or assembled for get togethers with family and friends (and for the chef to sample). Kind people often dropped off tins of good stuff they made. To try to reduce sweets, I looked at appetizer alternatives. I never realized how cream cheese and sour cream are the vital foundation for most of the dips that go with those healthy carrot and celery sticks on the relish tray.

Since I consider myself a kind, unselfish person, I am ashamed to admit good eats can cloud my vision. Diane and Jeff, from the Salem Bakery, brought a plate of cookies and candy and a small cake to a little party we had. The next day, I prepared a tray of left-overs for Mickey, a coworker who has been laid up with a broken wrist. I loaded up some nice ham and chicken wings, some vegetables and dips and pasta salad. When it came time to assemble a plate of desserts, I would reach for Diane and Jeff's wonderful cookies and, okay, I admit it, pull my hand away. I couldn't make myself part with them! I am a bad person. Mickey had to settle for a couple pieces of cake.

I didn't feel quite so bad when, the next day, I caught my companion, Gwen, stashing some chocolate covered peanut balls away for herself!!

No matter how I tried, I could not escape holiday temptations.

Sharp County reporter Tammy Curtis, gave me an antique Hanzel and Gretel cookie jar for Christmas. I love it but it only made matters worse. I now had a vessel to protect my candy and cookies!!!!

One night, I reached into the cookie jar and hauled out a cookie. It was extra good. I realized as I munched that the cookie had been sitting on a piece of peanut brittle and the two had melded (or melted) together. The Chocolate Chip Bar With a Peanut Brittle Crust (I need to work on the name a little) was invented in my special cookie jar. I need to get a patent on it. I guess, first, I need more research and development (and tasting). Dump some more brittle (Uncle Doris gave us a mess of it) in the bottom of the cookie jar and pile some cookies on top. Yes, research to see if the heavenly treat can be duplicated.

Like I said, it was waaaaayyyyy past time for the holidays to end...and the New Year's diet and exercise resolutions to begin.

It would not be so bad if the temptation were only for this one time of the year, but I too seem to be exposed to a continuous flow of sweet temptation, ALL year long, not only at the office but at family functions as well. I too have become a sweets addict!!!! In your and your partners case, you can afford a couple of extra sweets retreats, but in mine, I fear I will need to visit with "Omar the Tent maker" to purchase new-larger wearing apparel. Seems my sweets addiction is stronger than my willpower or motivation to BURN off the unwanted results.

I used to call this blog "Stranger In Town" but time goes by quickly. After a year in these parts, I realize people will still say, 'he's from off' but I now proudly claim I am a "Stranger No More"! After a lifetime in living in big cities, small town life has produced surprises, good and bad but, after more than a year, I love it (most of the time!). I promise to keep on writing about stuff that interests me and things I think of to complain about. I hope you will continue to check in occasionally to read and comment.
