One of my recent pet peeves is that I hate phoniness and lies. I am, however, all in favor of good manners, of a being waiting his turn in line, of not budging, of saying please and thank you and of not stealing anything, but I hate the average lie.
That's why I haven't yet married because unless I find that knee-knocking, teeth-chattering love, it isn't going to happen because anything less would be a sham. That's why I heard that my former bosses were on edge with me because they knew I would often say what I thought, with at least some of it being to their chagrin.
If this awful trait is genetic, then it came from my great-great grandmother, Raizel Koragdosky of Nairodich, Russia, who, rumor had it often said what was on her mind with at least some sarcasm thrown in. So there must be more to genetics and ancestry than meet the eye.
That's why I guffawed when I read about John Derbyshire being fired from the right-wing National Review. I have to admit that I'd never heard of him until he was fired from the right-wing National Review for writing a column advising his kids about how to conduct themselves in the wake of the Trayvon Martin shooting. To wit, Derbyshire wrote an article advising his children how to conduct themselves in black neighborhoods.
Among his advice was:
(10a) Avoid all concentrations of blacks not known to you personally.
(10b) Stay out of heavily black neighborhoods.
(10c) If planning a trip to the beach or amusement park at some date, find out whether it is likely to be swamped with blacks on that date (neglect of that one got me the closest I have ever gotten to death by gunshot).
(10d) Do not attend events likely to draw a lot of blacks.
(10e) If you are likely to attend some event, which the numbers of blacks is likely to swell, leave as quickly as possible.
Before the members of the Ernest T. Bass School of Possums and Interpersonal Relations, come out in full force with teeth bared and fingers and thumbs sailing across keyboards, note that not only do I agree with him, but so did many commentators on the Huffington Post.
Jackpot, a HuffPo user, wrote:
"There's a difference in being a "racist" and having the common sense to avoid places and situations where you might get robbed, beaten or shot. My safety is my own responsibility and there are dangerous situations I will avoid. Social issues have nothing to do with it."
"As the two young brits who took the wrong turn walking back to their hotel in florida and wound up in a black neighborhood and was murdered because they were white. Ask the gentleman from Baltimore who was stripped and beaten because he was white. As for Philly, all the black flash mobs who targeted white people and beat them. The list can go on and on, and these were recent... I avoid large crowds of obnoxiously loud and rude black youth in malls, in stores, in streets, etc... because the chance of something bad happening."
Even the statistics bear this out. Comparing the crime rate in Beverly Hills, California to Compton in South Central Los Angeles, there are the following numbers: In 2010, for every 100,00 people in Compton, there were 25 murders compared to 3 in Beverly Hills, 26 rapes compared in Compton compared to 4 in Beverly Hills and 433 robberies compared to 35. The statistics ain't pretty, even though Compton has cleaned up its act in the past twelve years.
Of course, not all black people are obnoxious and unruly but these things go on enough in black neighborhoods so that there comes an understanding that these are places to avoid yet this isn't lost on the black community, either. One grandmother I know wants to know why her people are killing each other. She said they don't care.
I know that slavery and things was hard for them, but I also know that things are hard for everyone at some point. Things were hard for the Jews and the Chinese and the Japanese. But most people aren't afraid to go into their neighborhoods by the light of day let alone after sunset.
The question is what are they going to do about it, but more than that where are Jesse Jackson and Al (SupaFly) Sharpton when they could really make themselves useful?
