Letter to the Editor (02/12/14)
Dear Editor, There will be citizen-organized meetings regarding the proposed sales tax increase to fund a new hospital in Sharp County on Monday, Feb. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Lighthouse Family Life Center, located at #7 Ponderosa Drive in Williford, and on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Poughkeepsie Fire Station...
Letter to the Editor (02/05/14)
Dear Editor, In the mid-1960s, when the war on poverty was begun, the minimum wage -- as corrected for a 2014 rate -- was $10.26. In those same 50 years, the cost of living has gone up 600-700 percent. And the minimum wage is in the low $7.++ range. That is an enormous loss to the American public. One which they cannot recover from. And a prime reason it now requires two incomes per household to just keep above water...
Letters to the Editor (02/05/14)
Dear Editor, Safe Passage, Inc. wants to thank the family of Boyce Jeffery for their generous donation of $2,625 in his memory. The donation came through the Mount Olive Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Letter to the Editor (01/22/14)
Dear Editor, I wonder if there are enough people with Parkinson's disease who live in this area who would be willing to call me if they are interested in forming a Parkinson's group locally? The closest groups are in Jonesboro or Mountain Home. Sharp County is in the Jonesboro group. ...

Editorial Response to previous Letter to the Editor (01/02/14)
Dear Editor, We would like to submit this response to the Dec. 11 Letter to the Editor regarding the "old" hospital property in Cherokee Village. As city councilmen, we always support and encourage the participation and opinions of our citizens, and we have no problem whatsoever with the opinion of the citizen who wrote the letter. The purpose of this letter is to simply clarify some of the inaccurate information that was listed in the letter...
Letters to the Editor (12/04/13)
The Thayer Alumni Board would like to thank the South Missourian News for the excellent coverage the paper has given to us for our activities this past year. Dear Editor, To the right is a photo from the Village Pride work-day last Saturday, to reclaim the park area next to Rosebud Park and the dam at Lake Cherokee. We had some great volunteer groups come out from the community, including The House of Luke Ministries, and the Advocates for Active Youth. We'll finish up the project in December. It's looking good!...
Letter to the Editor (11/27/13)
Dear Editor, On behalf of the Fulton County Hospital Foundation Board, we would like to THANK YOU for your contribution and participation in our first hospital benefit gala. The event was a huge success, with a net of more than $80,000 to support the bed ensemble project for the hospital. The Flutes and Diamonds Gala was a fun social event that we hope to repeat in the future, with new knowledge and experience to make it even bigger and better...
Letters to the Editor (11/27/13)
Dear Editor, An initiative petition has been submitted by Rodney Gray with the "Missourians for Safe Transportation & New Jobs" located in Jefferson City and was approved by the Secretary of State's office to seek signatures from Missouri citizens to place a 1 sales and use tax on the November 2014 General Election ballot in order to generate additional revenues for Missouri's transportation systems...
Letters to the Editor (11/20/13)
Dear Editor, Hello! My name is Ruth Davis and I was told that I had Parkinson's disease three years ago. It started overnight and we didn't have any idea what was going on. Are there people in this area who would like to form a Parkinson's support group? It would be affiliated with the American Parkinson Disease Association Inc. ...
Letters to the Editor (11/20/13)
Dear Editor, On Veterans Day we heard people all across America thanking veterans for their military service. We veterans really appreciate being thanked for our service. You may wonder why a person would sign up for military service where they might be killed or wounded when deployed to a foreign country. ...
Letter to the Editor (11/13/13)
Dear Editor, The Cherokee Village Suburban Improvement District would like to caution property owners not to blow, dispose of, or burn leaves and/or yard debris into or along the shoreline of the Cherokee Village Lakes. Putting this type of matter into the lakes causes silt and sediment to build up as it decomposes. This material is very costly to remove, and will eventually lead to low water conditions along the shorelines...
Letters to the Editor (11/06/13)
Dear Editor, After being rained out on Oct. 12, the rescheduled Big Thunder Potato Shoot event went off without a hitch on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 26. I still hear a BOOM, but it's a rather distant sound. Yes, the 2013 Arkansas State Championship Spudgun Competition is history. ...

The continual support of this community activity is sincerely appreciated...
Letters to the Editor (10/30/13)
Dear Editor, After reviewing the picture of the white horse, that looks as if it was never fed, groomed or received medical care, reading the story encouraged me to write. To think that someone will so blatantly say that this man was in jail for a week and this is the reason why the animals were in such a bad shape is just not a fact. I find it appalling that this case of total neglect, abuse and cruelty will be dropped...
Letter to the Editor (10/23/13)

Letter to the Editor (10/09/13)
Dear Editor, This letter is directed to my neighbors that live in the 200 block of E. Lake Shore Dr, in Cherokee Village (and any other neighborhood that has this problem). Are you aware of the "Leash Law" we have here? Even though your dogs are on your property and not fenced in, they still get off of your property and charge and bark at the people that like to take walks along the lake. ...
Letter to the Editor (10/09/13)
Dear Editor, Isn't it funny, what goes around, comes around? First, Hussein's Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, (probably made in Russia) then he didn't have any. Then, Assad's Syria had chemical weapons of mass destruction. Now Putin's Russia is going to confiscate Assad's chemical weapons and dispose of them. That's a joke...
Letter to the Editor (10/09/13)

Letters to the Editor (09/11/13)
Dear Editor, In 2010, a survey done in Oregon County recognized the need for improved nutrition in school-aged children. From this need, the Backpack Program developed. Teachers and nurses in our county schools help to identify children who might need additional food for the weekend. ...
Letter to the Editor (09/11/13)
Dear Editor, To Change or Not to Change. That is the Question. I was preparing an article for Avenues that was planned to focus on the good things that are happening in the region that are attracting new folks to visit and stay awhile. I had been taking lots of pictures over the last couple months, and attending events that focused on one particular group that seemed to be doing a good job. ...
Letter to the Editor (09/04/13)
The Izard County Senior Center is proud to now serve the Fulton County Senior Life Centers. NADC took over Fulton County Centers on July 1. Fulton County Centers were closed the week of August 12 to rearrange the facilities so that we might better serve all of our clients, whether through our centers or home delivered meals. We appreciate each one of you...
Letter to the Editor (09/04/13)
Dear Editor, Yesterday I received a telephone call from a lady that had attended a function in this area in June. She couldn't remember the name of the out door celebration. However, it had a booth with a large Banner reading "Sign up for a Free Pistol", and the booth was on the "right side of the field". ...
Letter to the Editor (07/24/13)
Dear Editor, It's not unusual to read letters to the editor which are in the form of complaints, so it is a real pleasure to write a letter to praise our local quorum court for an excellent decision made in a recent meeting. A month ago, it was brought to the attention of the court that the Department of Interior in the U.S. ...
Letter to the Editor (07/17/13)
Dear Editor, First of all, l'd like to say a great big "THANKS" for the group that put on the Thunderfest celebration in Cherokee Village. They put so much effort into the three day event for all the family to enjoy and it was great. I'm very disappointed that the crowd was a lot smaller than I thought it would be. ...
Letter to the Editor (07/10/13)
Dear Editor, A lot of people in Horseshoe Bend are very upset about Horseshoe Bend not having our own police officers any more, when there are other things that could be shut down to save money. Like not pay a golf pro to be here, and not keep putting money in the airport that is not used very much. There are many places and departments that could take cutbacks...
Letter to the Editor (07/03/13)
Dear Editor, After reading (Richard Irby's) article regarding the hospital in the current issue of The News, I would like to clarify some of the issues that were raised. First, it was OMC who initiated the discussion for an early termination of the management agreement. At the regular board meeting in April, the board voted against early termination of the contract. While it was a 4 to 3 vote, with my vote breaking the tie, the vote was against termination...
Letter to the Editor (07/03/13)
Dear Editor, I am writing you in regard to the articles in last week's paper regarding the Fulton County Hospital Board of Governors. No, I am not criticizing anyone or any articles -- my intention with this letter is to ask for support from the citizens of Fulton County. ...
Changes at Fulton County Hospital (06/26/13)
Dear Editor, The Fulton County Hospital Board met last night (6/24/13). Among other business, the board appointed County Judge Charles Willet as the new CEO, and county employee Darrel Zimmer as the COO. Both without a search, rationale, or even public discussion. ...
Never leave pets in hot cars ... (06/05/13)
Dear Editor: Summer is just starting, and already there have been reports from across the country of dogs suffering and dying after being left in hot vehicles. In Sacramento, a litter of nine one-month-old puppies, along with their mother and father, had to be rescued from a locked car. In Tennessee, two women are facing cruelty charges after one of the three dogs they left in a hot vehicle while they shopped died...
Possibility of gas price gouging questioned ... (06/05/13)
Dear Editor: I am hearing a lot of people talk about the apparent price-gouging of gasoline in the Thayer, Mo., area. I believe that it would be hard for the local stations to justify the prices if an investigation was made -- See the Missouri Unfair Practices 15 CSR 60-8.030(1)(A)-Price Gouging. ...
Former Student speaks out about New Tech (05/15/13)
Dear Editor, This school year, Highland High School became one of the nine New Tech schools in Arkansas. In this program, teachers are showing 8th and 9th grade students how to use technology by implementing laptops in nearly all of their classes. Educating students on technology currently used in the workforce is a plan with great potential, but also has its downfalls...

Dear Editor, As the President and CEO of Baxter Regional Medical Center, I realize that the recent Medicaid Private Option Expansion for Arkansas was a difficult decision for our legislators, thus I would like to express my personal opinion and thanks on the issue...
Letters to the Editor for the week of Aug. 22-28, 2012 (08/24/12)
A hearty and heartfelt "Thank You" to all the volunteer fire fighters who turned out in force last Wednesday (Aug. 15) as fires were called in across the county. It took Sturkie volunteers only seven minutes from the first call made to 911 for a water truck to arrive at the scene of a house fire on our farm...
Letters to the Editor - Week of July 26, 2012 (07/26/12)
Dear Editor: I have noticed that somehow over the past years the church has come to misunderstand the law of church and state being separate. This law was put in the Constitution so that the people could worship whoever they wanted to, but, the law does not mean that the church should ignore what is going on around us...
Letters to the Editor - Week of July 18, 2012 (07/18/12)
Dear Editor, Mack Jr. and Kim Keedy from Cash, Ark., traveled to Cherokee Village to watch the Thunder on Thunderbird fireworks on July 4, and became the lucky winners of a cash raffle. The raffle was held by the Spring River Paramedic Ambulance Service (SRPAS) Foundation, in support of SRPAS...
Letters to the Editor - Week of June 13, 2012 (06/14/12)
I sometimes introduce myself as a "Survivor" -- I'm not in the way we think of Cancer Survivors but, like so many, I'm surviving losing my mom to cancer. It's sad that it takes such a loss to get someone involved. My mom passed away before she got to Relay, so I attend Relay for her but, over the last 12 years, it's become so much more. It's for you and your loved ones too...
Letters to the Editor for the week of May 30-June 5, 2012 (05/31/12)
Dear Editor, I am writing in reference to the Fulton County Senior Centers and the change in management. I have worked closely with the centers, as an accountant, for the past 30-years that Connie Godwin has been in charge of them. She has always managed money in a responsible and honest manner. I have never seen anything inappropriate or dishonest. She has managed to keep the same services for our seniors in spite of drastic cuts in funding, even when costs were rising...
Letters to the Editor for the week of May 23-29, 2012 (05/23/12)
Dear Editor, I would like to write in response to the letter written in last week's paper by Shanna Maguffee. Wow! I don't know what article you read regarding the Senior Center, but the one I read gave BOTH Mrs. Connie Godwin and Mr. Ed Haas a chance to give their knowledge of the situation. ...
Letters to the Editor - Week of May 16-22, 2012 (05/17/12)
Dear Editor, a View of a "public meeting" I was one of the few attendees (we always need more) last month, on April 9th, at the Fulton County Quorum Court, (FCQC), meeting. As usual, I was shocked, dismayed and disappointed with the meeting; although, I'm less shocked, now-a-days, because this happens every month...
Week of May 9-15, 2012 (05/10/12)
Dear Editor, Village Pride of Cherokee Village would like to thank all the volunteers who came out on April 28th to help with the Spring Roadside Pick-up. Village Pride appreciates the effort and hard work of everyone that came out to help. Special thanks to Kiwanis, House of Luke Ministries, Keep Arkansas Beautiful and our sponsor King-Rhodes Realty...
