Atha Claudine Garner Heflin, 88, of Ash Flat, died April 6, 2007, at St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.

he was born Jan. 27, 1919, in Ash Flat, Ark., the first child of Thomas W. Garner and Isa (Godwin) Garner. During World War II she served in the Women's Army Corp (WAC) serving most of her time in Presque Isle, Maine. She is survived by: her son, Steven and Anita Heflin; one brother, Linn and Willie Ann Garner; one sister, Margaret Garner Brennan; one nephew, Tom and Shelly Garner; one niece, Julea and Brien Hall; one grand-niece, Lillie Garner Hall; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Elwyn "Al" Heflin; her parents; one brother, Johny Garner and one sister, Willie Mae Garner Pratt. Funeral services were held April 9 at the Tri-County Funeral Home in Highland with burial following at the Wiles Cemetery at Ash Flat. Jack Richardson and Brien Nix Hall officiated. Arrangements were made under the direction of the Tri-County Funeral Home of Highland. Pallbearers were Jim Godwin, Doris Godwin, Lehman Evans, Billy Joe French, Dan Max Orr, Cleo Hackney and Gary McCormic. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Ash Flat Cemetery Fund, in care of Nancy Orr in Ash Flat.
