Elizabeth "Betty" Jewel Beckert, 92, of Hardy died April 7, 2002, at Eastern Ozarks Regional Heath System in Cherokee Village.
Born Nov. 24, 1909, in Wildinsburg, Pa., she was the daughter of Warwick Riner Jewel and Gertrude Hurst Jewele. She grew up in Buffalo, N.Y., and was married there May 15, 1937, to John "Jack" Edward Beckert. After two decades of life on Long Island, N.Y., Betty and Jack retired to Hardy and resided in Woodland Hills until his death in 1973.
She was a homemaker, she had been very active in their children's school activities and was president of the PTAs of both grade school and high school. She continued to be involved with many community activities. She was active in the Timely Club, serving as district secretary and treasurer and the Hardy Garden Club, where she held the office of secretary. She had been a volunteer at the Senior Citizens Center and was a member of the auxiliary at Ash Flat Nursing Home. She was a very faithful attendant and active in her Woman's Circle at Spring River Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two daughters -- Linda Marean of Okatie, S.C., and Barbara Innis of Westborough, Mass.; a son, Charles R. Beckert of Massapequa, N.Y.; a sister, Margaret Leyonmark of Hamburg, N.Y.; a brother, Louvin Jewel of Kenmore, N.Y.; and three grandchildren, -- Deborah Marean of Durham, N.C., Jason Beckert of Seaford, N.Y., and Sara Hudson of Westborough, Mass.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
A memorial service will be May 13 at 10 a.m. at Spring River Presbyterian Church in Hardy. Burial will follow in Spring River Presbyterian Memorial Garden.
Arrangements are under the direction of Spring River Presbyterian Church.
Memorials may be made to the Spring River Presbyterian Church, St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, or a charity of the donor's choice.
