Daniel Wayne Puckett, 89, of Magnolia, Ark., died Dec. 3, 2006, at his home. Dr. Puckett was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Magnolia.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He received his bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. As mayor of Cave City, he brought the first rural dial telephone system to the state. Throughout his 38 years of service as a high school teacher and a college professor, he touched the lives of thousands of students. He was a charter member of the Arkansas Educational Research and Development Council, a member of the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association, and was granted emeritus membership in Phi Delta Kappa.

He is survived by his wife, Irene, to whom he was married for 66 years; a son, Daniel Wayne Puckett Jr. and his wife, Becky, of Fayetteville, Ark.; a daughter, Kittena Bell and her husband, Ronny, of Magnolia; grandchildren, Jeremy Puckett and his wife, Gretchen, Emily Puckett, Baret Bell and Erica Burch and her husband, Michael; and one great-granddaughter, Lydia Puckett.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Daniel and Susie Puckett; five brothers, Clyde, Olen, Vern, Deal and George; one sister, Ruth; and one great-grandson, Gavin Puckett.

A graveside service was held Dec. 7 at the Cave City Cemetery with Dr. Walter Smith officiating. Memorials may be made to Community Hospice, 1707 Eastridge Drive, Magnolia, AR 71753 or to the First United Methodist Church, 320 West Main, Magnolia, AR 71753.
