Frances Hugh Tanner of Wiseman, son of the late Herman Tanner and Annie Langston Tanner, was born Feb. 11, 1918, at Elizabeth, Ark. He died Feb. 20, 2007, at Randolph County Hospital in Pocahontas at the age of 89.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a founding member of Wiseman Baptist Church and a deacon for many years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Horseshoe Bend. He was united in marriage to Vera Crouch on Dec. 21, 1940, at Salem. He spent most of his years in Wiseman.
Survivors include three children, Alma Coleman and husband Paul of Blue Springs, Mo., Sharon McCarty and husband Larry of Lakeland, Fla., and James Tanner and wife Linda of Ash Flat; two sisters, Helen French of Fort Smith and Margaret Hilburn of Jonesboro; four grandchildren, Barry and Kevin Coleman, Terri Sheets and Shawn McCarty; four great-grandchildren; several nieces; and nephews; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife; an infant daughter; two brothers, Dyess and Noel Tanner; a sister, Ruby Montgomery; and his father and mother.
Funeral services were held Feb. 23 at the Horseshoe Bend First Baptist Church. Burial followed at Wiseman Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of the Cox-Blevins Funeral Home of Salem.
