Grady O. Smith, son of the late Thurman Smith and Carrie Watts Smith, was born Sept. 25, 1915, in Boswell, Ark. He died May 28, 2005, in Calico Rock at the age of 89 years.
Smith was united in marriage to Martha Marie Russell on Oct. 28, 1935, in Oxford, Ark. He served in the United States Army during World War II as a flight instructor.
During his working years, he had a wide variety of careers. He worked in retail and grocery business in Mountain View, Ark. He was employed by Trans World Airlines as an airplane mechanic. He was a flight instructor for Airway Flight Service. From 1960 to 1967 he owned and operated the Schooner Creek Resort at Table Rock Lake.
In 1967 Grady and Marie moved back to Calico Rock, where they purchased land on the White River for a cattle ranch. From 1967 to 2002 he served o the Board of North Arkansas Electric Cooperative. Smith was a member of the Calico Rock United Methodist Church. He enjoyed flying, fishing and traveling.
Grady leaves to mourn his passing: 22 nieces and nephews; one brother-in-law, Elwood Russell of Lee's Summit, Mo.; and a host of other relatives and many good friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sisters -- Mildred McNeill and Treva Knowles; two brothers -- Troy Lawence Smith and Autry Thurman Smith.
The funeral service was May 31 at the Calico Rock Funeral Chapel with Jerry Smith and Paul Seay officiating. Burial followed in Roselawn Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Eddie's Family Funeral Home in Calico Rock.
Pallbearers were John Lane, Rex Cook, Melvin Smith, Jim Murphy, Mike Miller and Marcus Montgomery.
Honorary pallbearers were directors of North Arkansas Electric Cooperative, Charles Jones, Alton Rush and Rick Knowles.
