Wendell C. Hassell, 85, of Batesville died Aug. 22, 2002, at his home.
Born Dec. 29, 1916, in Sidney, he was the son of Oscar B. and Rosa Cartwright Hassell. He was a retired Navy chief and a farmer. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and in the Korean Conflict. He was a Deacon Emeritus and a member of West Baptist Church. He was a Mason, a Shriner and a member of the Navy Fleet Reserves.
Survivors include four stepsons -- Lavon Baxter of Harrison, Deaun Baxter of Batesville, David Baxter of Bentonville and Ranyard Richard of Cameron, Calif.; two stepdaughters -- Lisa Haigwood of Newport, and Helen Gratsch of Ash Flat; a sister, Elwanda Crow of Prescott, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Pleasant Nix Richardson Hassell; his second wife, Geraldine Bradley Baxter Hassell; three brothers -- Loy Hassell, Happy Hassell and Boyd Hassell; and a foster brother, Earl Tosh.
The funeral was Aug. 24 at West Baptist Church with Bob Dailey and Brien Nix Hall officiating. Burial followed in Wiles Cemetery at Ash Flat.
Pallbearers were Delmus Caraway, Rodney Downing, Steve Hassell, Scott Baxter, Steve Baxter, Isaac Haigwood, Jonathan Richardson and Rance Bell.
Honorary pallbearers were Chance Baxter, Dr. Robert Walton, Dr. Steve Alexander, Felix Gaston, Vern Hicks, Bill Pate, Bill Westmoreland, Johnie Nix, Melvin Casey, Les Barnham and the Sunday School Class of the West Baptist Church.
Arrangements were by Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Batesville.
