Homer "Vern" Lavern Phillips was born Oct. 11, 1928, to Homer Phillips and Lena Phillips McSpadden in Sidney, Ark. He died July 24, 2006, in Garland, Texas, at the age of 77.
He married Ernestine Hatfield on June 8, 1952, in Batesville. They had one daughter, Robin Hedstrom, of Ft. Worth Texas.
He was a graduate of Sidney High School. Prior to his marriage, he served three years in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked at the Jacksonville Air Force Base for 11 years and also completed training to become a mechanic. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 10007. He loved NASCAR, professional basketball and animals. He was a Mark Martin fan and a Dallas Mavericks fan.
Besides his wife and daughter, he is survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and a sister-in-law, Nellie Qualls, of Mt. Pleasant. He is also survived by a step-brother, Carthel McSpadden, of Cave City and a stepsister, Mary Fulbright of Searcy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, an infant child, two nephews and his son-in-law, Eric Hedstrom.
Pallbearers were Gary Anderson, Donald Anderson, J.T. Thurman, John Mack Westmoreland, Donald Phillips and Delmus Caraway.
