Henry Merlin Walters Jr., 85, died Sept. 26, 2004, in Calico Rock.
Born April 21, 1919, in Austin, Minn., he was the son of Henry Merlin Walters Sr. and Mildred A. Mattern Walters.
He married Lavonne Cora Olson April 25, 1941. He spent his working years as a building contractor and also worked as a building inspector for the city of Horseshoe Bend.
He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of the Kiwanis club for 54 years, serving as lieutenant governor of Kiwanis in Iowa and Arkansas; president of Ozark Gateway Tourist Council for 15 years; a life member of the VFW Post 3896 in Cedar Falls, Iowa; member of Horseshoe Bend Chamber of Commerce, serving as president (1996-1998); director of Horseshoe Bend MRID; one of the original Horseshoe Bend Ambulance crew; 4-H Club leader in Black Hawk County, Iowa; past member of Dairy Board for National Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo, Iowa; and a member of Horseshoe Bend United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lavonne Walters of Horseshoe Bend; two sons -- Larry Walters of Waterloo, Iowa, and Jerry Ackerman of Logansport, Ind.; a brother, Winston Walters of Newport News, Va.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
A memorial service was Sept. 30 at Horseshoe Bend United Methodist Church with Mark Ashcraft officiating.
Arrangements were under the direction of Barker Funeral Home of Salem. Inurnment will be at a later date in Memorial Gardens in Waterloo, Iowa.
