Irene V. Baptist, 85, died Aug. 21, 2004, at Hospice Care Center in Fitchburg, Wis.
Born Sept. 16, 1918, in Centralia, Ill., she was the daughter of Lawrence W. Varner and Samantha Bradley Varner. She was a mother, homemaker, caretaker and a registered nurse. She was a private duty nurse at Scholitz and Allen hospitals and a staff nurse at Friendship Village in Waterloo, Iowa.
She grew up in Centralia and Patoka, Ill., and graduated as an RN from Burnham City Hospital in Champaign, Ill. It was there she met and on Feb. 4, 1940, married Howard O. Baptist. She lived in Waterloo for 37 years and in Cherokee Village for 18 years. She spent the last five years of her life in Fitchburg, with her son, William, and his wife, Bonnie.
She was a member of Grace Brethren Church in Waterloo and First Baptist Church of Cherokee Village where she taught Sunday school.
Survivors include two sons -- William H. Baptist (Bonnie) of Fitchburg and Douglas L. Baptist (Pat) of Montclair, Va.; a daughter, Janice Cribbs of Arkansas; a brother, L.W. Varner Jr. of Waterloo; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, L.W. Varner and Samantha Varner; her husband, Howard O. Baptist; her sister, Mae Nattier; and a son, David Allen Baptist.
At her wishes she was cremated.
