John B. Atkinson, 87, a lifelong resident of Batesville where he served as a city councilman and as police commissioner, died Sept. 20, 2003, in a Searcy hospital.
Born May 2, 1916, in Blanville, he was raised in Evening Shade. His parents were Ansel Burton Atkinson and Maude Bacon Atkinson. He worked for many years as an accountant for Hall Dry Goods, was active with his family and was a lifelong Razorback fan.
Survivors include his wife, Willene Younger Atkinson; one son, John Timothy Atkinson of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; one daughter, Jane Atkinson Marotta of Batesville; seven grandchildren -- Victoria White of Williamsburg, Va., John Marotta of Batesville, Jack Atkinson of Dallas, Texas, Daniel Marotta of Conway Ark., Brian Atkinson of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Laura Marotta of Conway, and Douglas Atkinson of Tuscaloosa; and four great-grandchildren -- Sam, Nick and Katelyn Hardin and Michael Marotta.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ray Atkinson; and two sisters -- Mary Qualls and Mabel Atkinson.
Graveside services were Sept. 23 at Oaklawn Cemetery, officiated by his grandson-in-law, Mark White, associate pastor at Williamsburg Baptist Church in Williamsburg, Va.
Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home in Batesville.
