James Fenton

James F. Fenton, 68, of Cherokee Village died at Oct. 12, 2005, at his home.

He was born May 23, 1937 in Chillicothe, Iowa, to Joshua Parker and Ellanore Sarrah Mathes Fenton. He married Irene Eckerson Jan. 13, 1990, in Burlington, Iowa.

A graduate of Agency High School and Parsons College, he earned an M.A. in counseling from the University of Wisconsin at Platteville. He received a specialist degree in educational administration from Truman State University at Kirksville, Mo.

He taught and coached at Farson, Iowa, Pekin, Iowa, Aplington, Iowa, Bellevue, Iowa, and Centerville, Iowa. He developed and was the administrator at the alternative high schools in Centerville, Iowa, Burlington, Iowa, and Newton, Iowa.

He was the development officer for Ozarka College, having developed and built a new satellite campus in Ash Flat. He was a member of Cherokee Village United Methodist Church. He was the alderman for Ward 3 Cherokee Village.

He was an active member on many state and local boards and community committees where he lived.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Darrell Fenton of Red Oak, Iowa, Craig Fenton of Burlington, Iowa; two daughters, Rhonda Guyer of Johnston, Iowa, and Laura Medlock of Lenexa, Kan.; two stepsons, David Eckerson of Muskogee, Okla., and Richard Eckerson of Houston, Texas; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa, Iowa, with Rev. Bob Dvorak officiating. Burial followed in Shaul Cemetery.

A memorial service was held Oct. 18 at Cherokee Village United Methodist Church with Pastors Kay and Bob Burton officiating.
