John H. Hartwig, 86, of Cherokee Village, Ark., formerly of Michigan City, Ind., died Dec. 28, 2007, at White River Medical Center in Batesville, Ark. He was born Oct. 3, 1921, in Michigan City, the son of John and Josephine Dundajewski Hartwig.
He retired from Pullam Standard Car Manufacturing Company in Michigan City, Ind., and moved to Cherokee Village. He was active in the American Legion, VFW and St. Joseph's Men's Club. He was a member of the St. Michael's Catholic Church in Cherokee Village. He is survived by: two daughters, Cynthia Dipert of Taylorville, Ill., and Patricia Fraze of LaPorte, Ind.; three step-children, Phyllis Boo of Michigan City, and Pat McKee and Gene Smiertelney both of Indiana; one sister, Joan Sarley of LaGrange, Ky.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Local arrangements were under the direction of the Higginbotham Funeral Service in Hardy. A memorial service is being planned for a later date with Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel in Michigan City, Ind.
