Johnnie Hazel Whitten, 85, of Evening Shade died March 11, 2003, at Sharp Nursing Home in Sidney where she was a resident for almost eight years.
Born Jan. 14, 1918, at Evening Shade, she was the daughter of Dudley Whitfield and Josie Kerr Wasson. She was owner and operator of Johnnie's Beauty Shop at Evening Shade for many years, a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 8042, and a member of Main Street Church of Christ in Evening Shade.
Survivors include two daughters -- Janie Gilbert of Jonesboro, and Jo Ann Cushman of Evening Shade; three granddaughters -- Jerri Jo Martin of Jonesboro, Michelle Huff of Hardy, and Karen Smith of Evening Shade; three stepgranddaughters -- Kay Lane of Omaha, Neb., Brenda Erickson of Jonesboro, and Janice Renda of Coram, N.Y.; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband William H. "Bill" Whitten; two sisters -- Jean Wasson and Jane Wasson Graddy; and a stepson, William J. Whitten.
The funeral was March 13 at Main Street Church of Christ with A.W. Goff officiating. Burial followed in Evening Shade Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Rick Martin, Richard Huff, Lance Smith, Gerald Erickson, Jeff Erickson and Rick Davis.
