James Hayden Kankey, 77, died Aug. 24, 2002, in Mountain Home.
Born March 3, 1925, in Wideman, he was the son of James William and Nora Long Kankey. He married Blonda Sherrill Dec. 31, 1950, in Batesville. The had two children together.
During his working years, he owned and operated the Wideman Store. He was also employed by the shirt factories in Melbourne and Salem, and enjoyed raising cattle on his farm. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was of the Methodist faith and was a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law -- Phyllis Emerson and Patricia and Kirk Miller, all of Melbourne; a sister, Mildred Kankey of Wideman; and five grandchildren -- Jason Miller, Mandy Miller, Luke Miller, Abbi Miller and Nick Miller.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a sister, Vetral Robins; a brother-in-law, Flavil Robins; and a son-in-law, David Emerson.
The funeral was Aug. 27 at the Roman and Billy Howard Memorial Chapel with Doyne Robertson officiating. Burial followed at Wideman Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gamelliel Jones, Darrell Ball, Kim Yancey, Charles Townsend, Joe Washington and Morris Jones.
Arrangements were under the direction of Eddie's Family Funeral Home in Melbourne.
