Matthew Bolar was killed in Iraq while serving his country May 13, 2007, by an explosive device. He was killed while trying to save one of his buddies and was awarded a Bronze Star after his death.

Matthew enlisted in 2004 and trained in four different camps learning to be both a paratrooper and a medic. He volunteered for his second tour of duty in Iraq.Memorial services for Matthew were held both in Montgomery, Ala. and in Arlington National Cemetery where he was buried.Matthew is survived by: his parents, Ruth Anne Adtkins of Montgomery and Gordon Bolar of Kalamazoo, Mich; his step-father Vernon Adkins; a sister, Emma Adkins; grandparents, Mrs. Bolar of Louisiana, Ruth Thompson Spray and Doctor and Irene Thompson of Ozark Acres. He left many friends and family to mourn his passing.
