Melvin Eugene Verble was born Aug. 16, 1921, in Pollard, Ark., the son of Thomas Jefferson Verble and Ella Brown Verble. He died Dec. 22, 2007, in West Plains, Mo. at the age of 86.

He was united in marriage Feb. 14, 1998, at Franklin, Ark., to Jannie Elliott, who preceded him in death on Aug. 3, 2002.*He was a former resident of Fenton, Mo., and spent most of his later years in Madisonville, Ky., before returning to Missouri. Mel, as he was known by family and friends, was a carpenter. He is survived by: two daughters, Margaretta "Sue" Sisk of Myrtle, Mo., and Linda Harrell of Enid, Mississippi; four grandchildren, Elaine Hartsock, Tammy Dees, Chris Harrell and Cindy Stephens; four great-grandchildren, Jonathan Dees, Brittany Stephens, Noey Dees and B.J. Stephens; one brother, Edward Verble of Tucson, Ariz.; several nieces; nephews; other relatives and friendsHe was preceded in death by: his parents, Jeff and Ella Verble; his wife, Jannie Verble; one son-in-law, Henry Sisk; four brothers, Dallas Verble, Cletis Verble, Clifford Verble, and Marvin Verble; and one sister, Evelene Bodine.Family visitation was Dec. 26 in the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer. Arrangements were under the direction of the Carter Funeral Home of Thayer.
