Tom (T.J.) Yowell was born on Oct. 9, 1931, in Paducah, Texas, to Mildred and Grover Yowell. He died Aug. 10, 2005 after a four-year battle with colon cancer. Remembered always as a humble, giving man, he was devoted to his family and country.
Yowell was preceded in death by his parents of Hardy. He was the beloved husband of 50 years to Marguerita. He is survived by his children, Mickie Smith; Karan and husband Stephen Marsh, Thomas and wife Lydia Yowell, Gary and wife Keren Yowell, and Wendy and husband Jon Weddle; grandchildren Brian Smith, Ryan, Jenna, Chris, Freddie, and Mannie Yowell, and Harrison and Alexander Weddle; sister Karli Dye of Amarillo, Texas, and brother Grover Yowell of Chatsworth, Calif.
Yowell was raised in Hardy and dreamed of flying jets. He joined the Air Force as a test pilot and was stationed in Ramstien, Germany, where he met and married the love of his life, Marguerita. Tom and Marguerita toured the world with their five children through Africa, Spain and several U.S. cities to retire after his tour in Vietnam in Sacramento, Calif. Tom graduated from USC with a master's in business administration and he taught at American River Junior College after retiring from the USAF. Tom then pursued a career serving the public with the California Department of Social Services.
Tom's second love was singing with Placerville's Gold Rush Chorus and barbershop quartet with his many close friends.
A vigil/rosary was held on Aug. 11 in Cameron Park, Calif. Services and internment with full military honors by Beale Air Force Base followed at Green Valley Mortuary, Cameron Park Aug. 12.
