Winford "Bill" Caldwell of Pleasant Grove, Ark., son of the late Eugene and Ann Bella (Piggott) Caldwell, was born on Oct. 6, 1923, at Parsons, W.Va.
He died Oct. 16, 2006, at his home at the age of 83.
Caldwell was united in marriage to Naoma Lavern Smith on Oct. 6, 1962, in South Mills, N.C. He later married Johnie Fly on March 15, 2004, at Salem, Ark.
Caldwell was retired from the United States Navy serving in World War II and the Korean War. He was a prisoner of war in the Korean War for 29 months. He served in five major battles -- Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Saipan, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
Survivors include his wife, Johnie Caldwell of Pleasant Grove; a stepson, Quincy Massey of Pleasant Grove; a stepdaughter, Shirley Lane of North Little Rock; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Naoma Caldwell; his parents; a brother, Charles Robert; a twin brother, Willard; and a sister, Merle Marie.
The body was cremated, with arrangements under the direction of Barker Funeral Home of Salem.
