Zala Beatrice Thompkins Johnson of Zion, Ark., daughter of the late Edgar Birdwell Thompkins and Suda Hatten Thompkins, was born Jan. 13, 1921, in Poinsett County, Ark. She died Feb. 27, 2008, in Calico Rock, Ark. at the age of 87.
She was united in marriage to James C. Johnson on Nov. 12, 1946, and to this union two sons were born. She was a homemaker. At times in her life she worked outside the home. She sold Avon, did upholstery and had a wood working shop where she made picture frames. She was a long time member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church.She is survived by: two sons and two daughters-in-law, Wilford Gene and ZaAnna Johnson of Clarksville, Ark., and Paul and Crystal Johnson of Evening Shade, Ark.; one brother, Wilton Thompkins of Evening Shade; two sisters, Betty Sue Burns of Russellville and Patsy Ann Dyer of Conway; eight grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; five sisters, Martha May Rogers, Violet Mary Carlton, Gay Nell Burns, Sarah Christine Austin, Aileen Doris Cole; one brother, Oliver Birdwell Thompkins.Funeral services were held March 1, at the Roman and Billy Howard Memorial Chapel in Melbourne with Bobby Cannon officiating. Burial followed at Antioch Cemetery under the direction of Eddie's Family Funeral Home in Melbourne. Memorials may be made to the Easy K Ranch in Melbourne.Pallbearers were John Turknett, James C. Johnson, Michael Johnson, Paul Johnson, Jr., David Ohler and James Reynolds.Honorary pallbearers were Joe Burns, Larry Strope, Wilton Thompkins and John G. Dyer.
