Calico man charged with felony

An early morning fire May 17, of a Calico Rock business has resulted in the arrest of one individual.

Sheriff Tate Lawrence said that shortly after 5 a.m. the Calico Rock Fire Department, assisted by the Pineville Fire Department, responded to Tiny's Tire Shop on Highway 56. The shop along with some vehicles were destroyed. Chief Investigator Charles Melton was called to the scene and it was determined that several thousand dollars in cash had been taken from the business.

Witnesses gave Melton the name of an individual who had been seen in and around the business early in the night. Carl Benjamin Vannatter, age 21, of 117 Ponderosa Street in Calico Rock was arrested and had on his person several thousand dollars.

Total loss is estimated at more than $114,000.

During the interview with Vannatter, he admitted to entering the building, setting the fire and taking money from a lock box. Sheriff Lawrence said that Vannatter remains in the Izard County Detention Facility pending formal charges to include arson, commercial burglary and felony theft.

Vannatter is also a suspect in the theft of money from the purse of a lady attending graduation ceremonies at Calico Rock High School. That case remains under investigation.

In an unrelated matter, Allen Wayne Kipfer, age 23, of Melbourne was taken into custody after allegedly attacking his 73-year-old grandfather. Kipfer remains in the Izard County Detention Facility on charges of domestic battering third degree.

Sheriff Lawrence said that a second person, Ronnie Hayden Womack, age 46, of Melbourne is accused of interfering with officers during the search for Kipfer. Womack was arrested and charged with obstructing governmental operations. Womack posted bond in the amount of $1,105 and was released from the Izard County Detention Facility.

A Salem man was arrested at a Brockwell residence following reports from Fulton County of erratic driving and the report of a fight at the Brockwell residence. Jason Dale Pittman, age 30, was charged with disorderly conduct, public intoxication and careless driving. Pittman remains in the Izard County Detention Facility.

William Austin Vickers, age 18, of Batesville was arrested and charged with public intoxication. Vickers later posted bond in the amount of $205 and was released from the Izard County Detention Facility.

Charlie F. Wade, of Needmore Road, Ash Flat was arrested Thursday night and charged with driving while intoxicated and operating a vehicle without insurance. Wade posted bond the following day in the amount of $1,335 and was released from the Izard County Detention Facility.

Jeffery T. Engle, age 39 of Mount Pleasant was arrested Friday on criminal contempt of court charges. Engle appeared in court on that date and was released.

Randy Keith Kurtley, age 38 of Arnold Spring Road, Melbourne was arrested Thursday on a Sharp County theft of property warrant. Kurtley was transported to the Sharp County Jail.
