Ophelia Broxson Smith, 78, daughter of the late Joseph and Caledonia Hennigan Broxson, was born on July 30, 1925 in Deweyville, Texas. She departed this life on Dec. 20, 2003, in Batesville, Ark. She was united in marriage to Donald Emerson Walls. Later in life she was married to Col. Thomas Tedford Smith. Ophelia spent her life working as a registered nurse; working in many of the local hospitals. Her last employment was at Mountain View Hospital. She also served in the peace corps as a nurse, and was a member of the Mt. Olive Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the Retired Nurses Association and the Retired Officer's Wives Association.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law -- Donald Emerson Walls and his wife, Carol, of North Little Rock and Sand Douglas Smith and his wife, Tara, of North Little Rock; four daughters and sons-in-law -- Anita and Donald Pitts of Kansas, Patsy and David Glenn of Wimberly, Texas, Mary Beth and Boyce Jeffery of Mt. Olive and Tandra Susan and Wayne Jones of Wooster, Ark.; one sister, Ora Thelma Sevier of Brady, Texas; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren,and a host of other relatives and many good friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; one son, Storm Mitchell Smith; three sisters -- Ollie Watson, Opal Stretcher and Ovie Hughes; two brothers -- James Broxson and Ed Broxson and one granddaughter, Lisa.
The funeral was Dec. 23 at 10 a.m. at the Mt. Olive Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Jeff Sanders officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olive Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Eddie's Family Funeral Home in Melbourne, Ark.
Pallbearers were Christopher Patterson, Donnie Walls, Jason Jones, Cameron Jeffery, Garrett Sullins and Brent Sullins.
Honorary pallbearers were Lauren Sullins and Lisa Moore.
