Raymond Sam Childers, 82, of Thayer, Mo., was born Jan. 23, 1921, in Oregon County, Mo., and died Jan. 11, 2004, at the Fulton County Hospital in Salem, Ark.
He was a farmer for the majority of his life, and also ran a general store in Koshkonong for 26 years with his wife, Cecile. He was a Christian and was of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Cecile Holmes-Childers; three daughters -- Betty Rae Boles and husband, Frank, of Enterprise, Ala., Shirley Day and husband, Sonny, of West Plains, Mo., and Ophelia Ann McCullough and husband, Steve, of Thayer, Mo.; three grandchildren -- Angela Gargus and husband, Darren, of West Plains, Mo., Simone Long and husband, David, of Ashburn, Va., and Stephenie McCullough of Thayer, Mo.; two great-grandsons -- Benjamin and Joshua Long of Ashburn, Va.
He was preceded in death by his parents -- Arthur Houston Childers and Aucydine Mahalia Grooms-Childers; one sister, Empo Bowers; and two nephews -- Carl and Paul Bowers.
The funeral was Jan. 14 in Clary Chapel with Daryl Johnson and Wayne Adrian officiating. Interment was in the Thayer Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of the Clary Funeral Home of Mammoth Spring.
Pallbearers were Frank Bowles, Sonnny Day, Steve McCullough, Darren Gargus, Charles Case and Jason Bowers. Honorary pallbearers were Jerry Strain, Darrell Dustin, Don Bowers, Ruben Reese, Carl Day and Jerry Todd.
