Thayer man charged with involuntary manslaughter

Thursday, September 16, 2004

Last week Oregon County, Mo., Prosecuting Attorney Fred O'Neill amended a charge against a Thayer, Mo., man from assault to involuntary manslaughter.

According to a report from O'Neill's office, the charges stem from an incident that occurred at Shady Oaks Nursing and Rehab Center in Thayer Aug. 30. The report said Jameson K. Witt, 21, allegedly fell on LPN Angela King of Ash Flat, Ark., during an altercation. After Witt fell on King she began coughing up blood. She was transferred to Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains and later transferred to a Springfield hospital where she died Sept. 2. State medical examiner Dr. Paul Spence said Sept. 7 that it was his opinion that King died of a massive heart attack, probably brought on by the altercation with Witt.

King, 36, and another Shady Oaks employee, Rhonda Johnson, were escorting Witt from the facility after he became loud and verbally abusive to staff members. Witt was at Shady Oaks to visit another employee. After he was told he could not, the altercation began.

Thayer Police Chief Gene Hatman said officer Michael Bunting responded to the call at approximately 10 p.m.

Witt posted a $20,000 bond on the assault charge and is still free on that charge.

He is scheduled to be in Oregon County Associate Circuit Court this week for a new bond hearing.

Shady Oaks Administrator Dave Medley said the staff at the facility is deeply saddened by the death of King. "Our main focus is giving support to the family. At no time during this incident was any of our patients in danger or at risk."

Medley said King had been employed at the facility since August 2002 and had worked at the nursing facility in the past.
