A+ handbook approved

COUCH -- Couch School Board members approved the A+ Handbook at their March 15 meeting. They approved the 2003-04 budget and discussed progress being made toward the upcoming Missouri School Improvement Program.

Members voted to lease-purchase a 65-passenger conventional school bus. The bus is being purchased from the Ponder Equipment company.

Baccalaureate services at the school will be May 14 at 7 p.m. and graduation will be May 15 at 7 p.m.

School board members were informed of alternate plans for the senior trip. Seniors had planned on going to Panama City, Fla., but if funds are not raised they will go to Myrtle Beach, S.C., instead. There were no objections to the plan.

Board members evaluated the At Risk program at the school and approved the At Risk Plan.

They discussed future transportation of preschool students on school buses. No action was taken on the issue. The board voted to designate Current River Area Vocational Technical School as the vocational school Couch students will attend and voted to approve the submission of the 2004-05 Safe School Grant application.

The building principals presented monthly attendance reports and reported on upcoming extra-curricular events. School board members were informed that Gatewood eighth grade students visited the campus and that plans have been made for Lone Star eighth grade students to visit. Spring testing will begin April 12. School board members were informed that the Reading First Grant application was submitted and that a parent/student activity has been scheduled in the elementary for April 1.

During executive session the board voted to add Angela Meredith's name to the substitute teachers list and voted to accept the resignations of Ricky Arnold, Mary Mayberry, Kimberly Haynes and Donald Blanchard. They voted to extend Carolyn Baker's employment through the end of the 2003-04 school year and to allow superintendent Rolla Fraley to employ a janitor/bus driver.

The board voted to allow Dana Fraley to take a 12-month leave of absence for the 2004-05 school year. They voted to offer teaching contracts to: Joshua Alexander, Romona Hampton, Teresa Holder, Steven Martz, Kristin Parker, Jason Qualls, Kelly Roberts, Pamela Smith, Lacey Sorrell and Rachel Young. They voted to employ Sharon Mathis on a part-time basis for the 2004-05 school year.

The next regular meeting of the Couch School Board will be April 13 at 7 p.m. in the school library.
