Born 4-22-1916 -- Died 2-28-2004
Viola Strain, daughter of the late Everett W. Combs and Rosa Ellen Tarlton Combs, was born April 22, 1916, in Oregon County, Mo., and died Feb. 28, 2004, in Alton, Mo. at the age of 87 years.
She was united in marriage Oct. 6, 1937, in Alton, Mo., to Wallace Strain. She was a loving and devoted mother and was known for her devotion to her family and her beautiful garden. She was a Christian, having been saved as a young girl and attended Bailey Freewill Baptist Church near Alton. She will be sadly missed but her family's loss is heaven's gain.
Survivors include two sons -- Darrell Strain and wife, Esther, of Alton, Mo., and Dr. Phillip Strain and wife, Donna, of Mountain Grove, Mo.; two daughters -- Linda Kay Caruthers and husband, Mack, of Joplin, Mo., and Judith Ann Mills of Alton, Mo.; three brothers -- Russell Combs, Lawrence Combs and Donald Combs; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son-in-law, Norman Mills; a grandson, Curtis Wayne Strain; a great-grandchild, Alexandra Bandy; three brothers -- The Rev. Davie N. Combs, Ralph Combs and Clifford Combs; and two sisters -- Leona Combs and Vesta Sanders.
The funeral was March 2 at Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer with the Rev. Darrell Strain officiating. Interment was in the Smith Cemetery at Alton with arrangements under the direction of Carter Funeral Home Inc., of Thayer, Mo.
Pallbearers were Ricky Caruthers, Michael Caruthers, Greg Johnson, Danny Shannon, Jeff Honeycutt, Randy Caruthers, Seven Mills, David Virtue, Jeff Strain and Nick Schmidt.
