Irene V. Baptist, 85, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Aug. 21, 2004, at the Hospice Care Center in Fitchburg, Wis.
She was born Sept. 16, 1918, in Centralia, Ill., to Lawrence W. Varner and Samantha Bradley Varner.
She was a mother, homemaker, caretaker and registered nurse for most of her life, providing care and comfort to many. She was a private duty nurse at Scholitz and Allen Hospitals and a staff nurse at Friendship Village in Waterloo, Iowa.
She grew up in Centralia and Patoka, Ill., and graduated as a registered nurse from Burnham City Hospital in Champaign, Ill. It was there she met and on Feb. 4, 1940, married Howard O. Baptist.
She lived most of her adult life in Waterloo, Iowa, (37 years), Cherokee Village, Ark. (18 years), and the last five years of her life in Fitchburg, with her son, William and his wife, Bonnie.
She was a member of Grace Brethren Church in Waterloo, for many years, teaching Sunday school and participating in many church activities. She was also a member of First Baptist Church of Cherokee Village again teaching Sunday school.
Survivors include two sons -- William H. Baptist (Bonnie) of Fitchburg and Douglas L. Baptist (Pat) of Montclair, Va.; one daughter, Janice Cribbs of Arkansas; a brother, L.W. Varner Jr. of Waterloo; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, L.W. Varner and Samantha Varner; her husband, Howard O. Baptist; her sister, Mae Nattier; and a son, David Allen Baptist.
At her wishes she was cremated.
