Lady Hound express pulls in for pit stop on way to state tourney

The Salem Lady Greyhounds express finally pulled into the station for a pit stop.

After peeling of 16 straight games without a defeat, the Lady Hounds came up one run short of the Newark Lady Kangaroos in the championship game of the Class AA Region 3 Softball Tournament in Brockwell April 28.

The Lady Roos rallied from three runs down to knock off Salem (16-4) 4-3 for the title.

The Lady Greyhounds still advanced to the Class AA State Tournament in Harrison despite the game's outcome.

Samantha Smith had a big day for the Lady Hounds, going three-for-three with two runs scored.

Smith got Salem going in the first by getting on base and later swiping home for the first of the Lady Hounds' two first-inning runs.

Tacking on another run in the third frame, Salem held a 3-0 lead before Newark rallied.

The Lady Roos crossed the plate three times in the fourth to deadlock the contest and they posted the winning run in the fifth.

Cassi Hickinbotham fanned six and gave up five walks in the loss, while Andrea Romine added a hit for the Lady Greyhounds.

In semi-final action, Hickinbotham tossed a complete game in Salem's 14-7 win over Sloan-Hendrix April 27.

Hickinbotham allowed seven hits and seven walks, while fanning three.

Posting only four hits on the afternoon, the Lady Greyhounds took advantage of 16 walks on the game.

Tabitha Hall came up with a double in the first inning that plated two runs, helping the Lady Hounds to a fast start in their seven-run victory.

In opening round play, Salem wasted little time in dismantling Tuckerman, as they rolled to a 15-0 blanking of the Lady Bulldogs April 26.

Hickinbotham earned the win with five strikeouts.

Julia McBride went three-for-three at the plate, with six ribbies for Salem.

Carrie Johnson added three RBIs on a pair of hits.
