Audrey Swope, 85, daughter of the late Thomas Andrew Collins Sr. and Minnie Ann Worel Collins, was born Nov. 26, 1918, in Fulton County, Ark.. She died Nov. 29, 2003, at Las Cruces, N.M. She was married to Orville Swope who preceded her in death.
She was a long time educator, teaching in Mammoth Spring School District from 1944 to 1976. In 1960 she was named Teacher of the Year and in 1971 was selected Leader of American Elementary Education. She was a writer, publishing her first book "Doctor's Detour" in 1988. She instigated a $500 state scholarship named the Audrey Swope Creative Writing Contest, awarded to 11th and 12th grade students.
She was active in many civic clubs and organizations, including the 20th Century Club where she was president for several years. She received the Natural Resources Award for her leadership in getting Swareflex wildlife warning reflectors installed on Highway 289 in Fulton County. She was a former council member for the city of Mammoth Spring and served on the library board. She was active in the Democratic Party across the State of Arkansas.
She was a member of First Christian Church and later was a member of the Methodist Church in Mammoth Spring. She was active in church work, serving as Sunday School superintendent and teacher.
Services were Dec. 6, at Carter Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Terry Sagar officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery in Mammoth Spring. Arrangements were by Carter Funeral Home of Thayer.
Pallbearers were Jim Collins, Bob Rhoads, Brian Davis, Leh-man Hall, Steve Collins and Chris Collins.
