Dan Allison Cover, 73, died peacefully Dec. 2, 2003, at Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains. Dan was born Nov. 11, 1930, in Mountain Grove, Mo., the son of Harold and Pauline Cover. He was a graduate of Thayer High School and attended Central Methodist College, Drury College, and graduated from the University of Missouri in Columbia.
After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he returned to Thayer, Mo. He then built a small lumber company. Under his guidance for over fifty years, it developed into the thriving business you see today.'
In recent years he built and flew remote controlled planes. He donated land for a flying field for the Thayer Flying Club.
He was an avid Falconer. His interest in falconry stated as a small boy and he pursued this passion up until his health began to fail. He was a past president of the North American Falconer's Association (HAFA). Dan was instrumental in reintroducing the endangered Peregrine Falcon to the wild.
In September of 1996, he published a book about his Falconry memoirs called "Oh, Those Wonderful Hawks." another passion of Dan's was to preserve the native prairie land of Missouri. He donated 1,000 acres of land in which he had restored back to native prairie and the perfect quail habitat to the Missouri Department of Conservation. He was a passionate political participant, loved controversy and enjoyed the less than main stream positions.
He was a Unitarian, and was involved in building the first Unitarian Universalist Church in Springfield, Mo.
Survivors are his wife, Maureen; his mother, Pauline; his son, George, daughter-in-law, Jeaneen; two granddaughters -- Amanda and Aimee of Plattsburg, Mo.; and many loving friends and employees.
Dan was preceded in death by his father, Harold A. Cover.
Memorial contributions may be made to the West Plains Animal Shelter which may be left at the Carter Funeral Home in Thayer.
Memorial services were Dec. 6 at Carter Funeral Home in Thayer.
Burial was at Thayer Memorial Cemetery with arrangements by Carter Funeral Home of Thayer.
Pallbearers were Keith Thompson, Lindy Cash, Nick Polland, George Smith, Rob Lyttle and Garen Gilmore.
Honorary pallbearers were Ken Abrahams, Doug Johnson, Danny Johnson, Doil Hickinbotham, Lester Riley, Bobby Ward, Keith Smith, Charles Riley, Mark Underwood, Curtis Poulette, Don Johnson, Tim Falke, Robert Johnson, Jerry Rucker, Bob Grimes, Ernie Andrews, Eric Rogers and Roger Humphrey.
