Those in attendance at the finals of Van Buren's Lady Dawg Classic expecting to see a spirited battle between two rival squads got their money's worth.

Those expecting to see a shootout between two of the state's most explosive guards might have been left wanting a little bit more Dec. 6.

In the end, the Thayer Lady Bobcats just had too much firepower for the Couch Lady Indians, as Thayer claimed the tourney title with a 62-46 win. The Lady Bobcats are now back-to-back owners of the Lady Dawg crown, having won last year's tourney as well.

Although the showdown between Thayer's Megan Underwood and Couch's April Redus never really materialized, there were plenty of fireworks as both teams battled hard for the Lady Dawg title.

Underwood led the Lady Bobcats with a game-high 22 points, but the headliner was Thayer's defense, as they held the dynamic Redus to nine points and the Lady Indians to just two field goals in the second period.

Both teams opened the game sluggish as cold shooting on both ends of the floor saw the first period end with Thayer in front 10-6.

The Lady Cats warmed up a touch in the second period, but after Tonya Combs (five points) hit a jumper at the 6:56 mark, the Lady Indians hit a lengthy dry spell.

Sarah Caldwell (14 points) popped Thayer's first trey of the game and the Lady Bobcats went on an 11-0 run to grab a 23-12 lead late in the second.

Sandy Labahn (eight points) broke the Thayer run with a traditional 3-point play just before the half, but the Lady Bobcats took a 24-17 lead to the break.

This lead continued to grow in the third as Caldwell started the second half with another 3-ball for Thayer as the Lady Cats pushed the advantage further in their favor in the period.

By the time Redus posted her first field goal of the game, with 1:50 left in the third, the Lady Bobcats held a 40-28 edge.

Caldwell canned her third trey of the game just before the period's end as Thayer pushed their lead to 46-30 after three.

Underwood logged a pair of 3-pointers in the last frame as Thayer continued to roll, capturing the 2003 Van Buren Lady Dawg crown with a 62-46.

Caitlyn Melton paced Couch with 14, while Kim Labahn added 12.

Summer Jones posted nine points for Thayer, while Christa Cox, Kylee McAlmond and Valerie Dixon added four points each.
