The Viola Longhorns enjoyed a tough week of competition in the Williams Baptist Tournament at the Southerland-Mabee Center in Walnut Ridge, with the Lady Longhorns making it all the way to the finals, while the Longhorns came up just a little short in the semi-final round.

The Lady Longhorns fell to the red-hot Southside Lady Southerners 39-23 Dec. 6 in the senior girls' finals, while a triple-double of 10 points, 10 blocks and 11 rebounds from Dustin Jones could not prevent Southside's Josh Massey from hitting the game winning shot with one second left in the game as the Southerners edged the Longhorns 46-44 in the senior boys' semis.

Kyla Batterton helped the Lady Longhorns to a 64-31 win over the Lynn Lady Lions in the opening round of the WBC tourney Dec. 1.

Batterton paced Viola with 16 points as the Lady Longhorns outscored Lynn 25-7 in the third period to pull away for the victory.

Melinda Guffey added eight and Mandi Fore seven for Viola.

The Lady Longhorns' next opponent was the River Valley Lady Rangers Dec. 2.

Batterton had another big game with 14 points as Viola edged past River Valley 47-41.

Guffey followed with 10 points, while the Lady Rangers were paced by Megan Johnson with 12. April Durham added 11 for River Valley.

The Lady Horns (12-4) advanced to the title game of the tourney with a 35-29 win over the Hoxie Lady Mustangs Dec. 5.

Viola held a 24-18 lead at the half and fought off a Lady Mustang rally that saw Hoxie trailing by just two, 29-27, at the end of three.

The Lady Longhorns kept Hoxie at bay, holding the Lady Mustangs to two points in the fourth period to advance with a win.

Batterton again led the Lady Longhorns with 13. Guffey followed with nine, Chelsea Taylor six and Lindsey Barker five for Viola.

The Longhorns opened play in the WBC tourney with a 60-42 win over Maynard Dec. 1.

Dustin "Big Country" Jones paved the way for Viola with 22 points, eight boards and six blocked shots. Dustin Shrable followed with 11 points, while Cody Hutson added nine for the Longhorns.

Cory Batterton's 13 points led the way for the Longhorns Dec. 4 as they knocked the Lynn Lions out of the tournament field with a 54-49 win.

Viola led 24-22 at the half before posting the five-point victory.

Brett Cotter added 12 and Jones 11 for the Longhorns.

Southside ended the Longhorns' bid for the WBC title Dec. 5 with a 46-44 win on a shot as time expired.

In addition to Jones' triple-double, Cotter logged 11 points, and Hutson 10 for Viola.
