A Mountain View, Mo., man was killed Aug. 2 in a one-car accident five miles south of Mammoth Spring.

Harold L. Cole, 87, was southbound on Highway 63 when he lost control of his 2000 Ford Taurus on a curve, according to the Arkansas State Police trooper Ronnie Stewart.

Cole overcorrected and crossed into the northbound lane and ran off the east side of 63, according to state police. The vehicle hit two trees, flipped up on its side and hit several more trees.

Cole was declared dead at the scene by Fulton County Coroner Steven Barker. His passenger, 74-year-old Gertrude E. Rhodes, was air lifted to St. John's Hospital in Springfield. Her condition was unknown at press time.

Rhodes was Cole's sister.

The state police, Mammoth Spring Fire Department and the Salem Fire Department worked the wreck.

Officials at the Fulton County Sheriff's Office said weather was not a factor in the wreck.
