Ozarka College

Last fall, I taught a course at Ozarka College (Melbourne Campus) titled CIS 1303 -- Computer Information Systems. This fall semester, I'll be teaching the same course, along with a second course titled CIS 1003 -- Introduction to Computers. Both classes will be at the temporary Remington Plaza facility in Ash Flat.

Ozarka College started as a vocational-technical school in 1975 to provide vocational training to residents of Izard, Fulton, Sharp and Stone counties. In 1991 the Arkansas State Legislature deemed it a technical college. In 1996 the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools determined that Ozarka Technical College had fulfilled all requirements for accreditation.

By 1999 Ozarka College had enough available degree programs to drop the word "Technical" from its title. With current enrollment of approximately 800 students per semester and a diversity of programs, Ozarka students are able to transfer to four-year colleges and universities around the state.

The main campus is located in Melbourne. Ash Flat and Mountain View satellite classrooms, as well as most local high schools, also offer courses. Web-based and tele-courses are available too. Construction on the new Ash Flat facility is under way, and expected to be partially-functional next year.

Ozarka College has a wide variety of programs available in technical and academic areas, providing the area with the type of service needed for today's marketplace. The quality of education is especially high with a low student-to-faculty ratio. Individual students receive more assistance.

General Departments: English, Fine Arts, Math, Science, Social Science, and Adult Education.

Professional Departments: Administration, Continuing Education, Computer Services, Distant Education, Finance, Human Resource, and Library.

Technical Programs: Automotive Service, Business Technology, Criminal Justice Leadership, Culinary Arts, Early Childhood Development, EMT Basic, General Technology, Health Information Management, Information Science Technology, and Licensed Practical Nursing. Associate of applied science degrees are offered in automotive service technology, business technology (with options in business administration, banking and finance, or information technology), criminal justice leadership, general technology, health information management (with options in transcription or coding options), and physical therapist assistant.

Technical certificates are offered in automotive service technology, business technology, culinary arts and licensed nursing assistant. Certificates of proficiency are also offered for certified nursing assistant, EMT-basic, early childhood development, and business support services. Ozarka College also has associations with area colleges and universities, such as an ASU program leading to an associate in science degree in nursing.

Ozarka College is a great place to start your college career or get caught up with the latest technology and methodology in your field of endeavor. The world is changing before our eyes, and you're never too old to learn.
