Jessie Wallace Carter, 73, of Jonesboro, Ark., died March 30, 2004, at his home. Born in Nettleton and, except for one year, lived his entire life in the old town of Nettleton. He was retired from the General Electric Company in Jonesboro with 34 years of service, retiring as a quality control inspector.
He was a long-time member of the Jonesboro Church of God where he served as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, trustee, finance board member, and church clerk.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Virginia Metz Carter of the home; two sons -- Ed Carter of Jonesboro and Dennis R. Carter of Cherokee Village; two grandchildren -- Katrina Carter Groves and David Carter; and two great-grandchildren -- Devon Groves and Emma Carter.
He was a 1948 graduate of Nettleton High School.
He was preceded in death by his parents -- J.E. "Boy" Carter and Lizzie Hutchinson Carter; three sisters -- Helen Needham, Corine Reid and Margurite Moore; and four brothers -- Spencer Carter, Elmo Carter, Edgar Carter and Vic Carter.
The funeral was April 2 at Jonesboro Church of God with the Rev. C.E. Sturch, the Rev. Jim Cantrell, Katrina Groves and David Carter all officiating. Burial followed in Nettleton Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro.
Pallbearers were Floyd Bonham, Neal Moore, Brooks Griffith, Clarence Shinault, Bob Mariott and Ricky Haynes.
Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Danny Grubbs, Dr. Anthony White, Bill Mitchell, Jeff Kiech, Brooks Hall, Alan Groves, his Sunday School Class members and his brothers-in-law.
