County tourism plan ready to see

Wednesday, April 17, 2002

OREGON COUNTY -- The Oregon County Commission in conjunction with the Oregon County Action Group has received a grant from the United States Forest Service to contract with tourism specialist Glenn Weaver to develop a comprehensive tourism plan for the county. According to those involved the goal of this endeavor is to enhance the local economy by marketing the region better and increasing the revenue received from tourism.

The tourism plan for Oregon County is under way. Weaver has conducted five assessment meetings throughout the county to gather citizen input on the direction tourism should take in the county. Over 50 people attended these meetings and others have provided historical information about famous people (heros and outlaws) and events that stand out in Oregon County history.

According to Presiding Commissioner Leo Warren, Weaver has compiled the community input and historical information into a preliminary tourism plan. He will be presenting the plan for public review April 25 at 2 p.m. in the Oregon County Conference Room located in the basement of the Oregon County Courthouse.

"The commission wants to thank everyone who has been involved in the assessment and planning process. All interested citizens are encouraged to attend Weaver's presentation," Warren said.
