Koshkonong girl to undergo bone marrow transplant

Wednesday, August 8, 2007

For the second time in four years, a Koshkonong girl will undergo cancer treatments for leukemia.

Amber Dern, 16, the daughter of John Dern and Laura Wallace is in need of a bone marrow transplant and a donor has been found.

A family friend said the transplant is scheduled for the end of September.

She is currently a patient at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. She is undergoing chemotherapy treatments and her family is with her in Memphis staying at the Target House. The friend said Dern is responding well to the treatments.

"After her transplant next month, she will have to stay nearly 100 days in the intensive care unit at the hospital," the friend said.

This family is in need of help. An account has been established for Dern at the Great Southern Bank.

On Aug. 31 a benefit barbecue and fund raiser will be held at the Koshkonong City Park starting at 3 p.m.

A silent auction will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. There will be prize drawings, a bake sale and live music provided by the Backflash Band from 7 to 9 p.m.

Anyone that would like to donate toward the fundraiser may do so by calling Michelle at 417-264-7224 or 417-280-5823.

Anyone that would like to send Dern a card or letter may do so at: Amber Dern, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, TN. 38134. Dern will be a junior this fall at Koshkonong High School.
