Ruth Fernow

Marvin Glen Fernow, son of the late James Fernow and Glenna Tabor Fernow, was born June 12, 1914, in Marion, Iowa and died Nov. 17, 2004, in West Plains, Mo. at the age of 90 years.

Ruth L. Fernow, daughter of the late Carl F. Michel and Charity Maier Michel, was born July 12, 1916, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and died Nov. 19, 2004, in Koshkonong, Mo. at the age of 88 years.

They were united in marriage June 23, 1935, in Marion, Iowa.

Together they were successful cattle ranchers in Iowa and South Dakota for many years. Mr. Fernow was a former president of the Cattleman's Association in Linn County, Iowa. He grew the first hybrid seed corn in the state of Iowa and was also the first to build a self-unloading feed wagon and front end loader. In 1936, he was awarded an Allis Chalmer tractor for selling the most combines. He was active in many civic organizations and during the Centennial year he drove a team of horses in many parades and taught the horses to kiss him.

After retiring and moving to Thayer, he enjoyed raising horses and was active in the Thayer Round-up Club.

Mrs. Fernow was a devoted homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed family gatherings and picnics.

She was an avid gardener, loved dancing, golfing, bowling, fishing and playing croquet. Mrs. Fernow was also a member of the National Cancer Society. Together they loved playing cards with their family and many friends.

The family would like to thank the special caregivers, Margaret, Stephanie and Lela for their many acts of kindness.

Survivors include one daughter -- Joanne Williams of San Diego, Calif.; three sons -- Robert Fernow and wife, Jan, of Aurora, Colo., David Fernow and wife, Carol, of Oklahoma City and Roger Fernow and wife, Karen of Hutchinson, Kan.; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving Mr. Fernow is a brother, Loyd Fernow and wife, Claire, of Marion, Iowa. Also surviving Mrs. Fernow is a sister, Marguriette Smithmeyer of Wonder Lake, Ill.

Mr. Fernow was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harold Fernow; and two sisters -- Margaret Machacek and Maxine Neff.

Mrs. Fernow was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

The memorial service was Nov. 21 at Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer with the Rev. Wayne Adrian officiating. Burial was in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Local arrangements were under the direction of Carter Funeral Home Inc. of Thayer.
