The Melbourne Bearkatz (33-0), ranked number one in Class AA and number 10 in the state overall rankings, continued their unbeaten season Feb. 11 with a 77-45 win over the Mount Pleasant Bluebirds.
Melbourne set the tone for the game right from the start as Adam Hoskinds launched back-to-back 3-pointers to get the Bearkatz off to a fast 6-0 lead.
Hoskinds nailed five treys on his way to a game high 19 points for Melbourne.
The Bluebirds hung tough in the first period as Spencer Young (14 points) started a 6-0 Mount Pleasant run with a 3-pointer, and Adam Howard's (12 points) layup at the buzzer saw the Melbourne lead trimmed to two, 15-13, after one.
Andrew McFarland (eight points) expanded the Bearkatz' lead as he opened the second with a long 3-ball, and then fed Cody Moser a behind-the-back pass on a fast break for a layup and a 20-13 Melbourne lead at the 7:24 mark.
A couple of stickbacks by Chad Milligan (15 points) midway into the period saw the Bearkat lead at 10, 27-17.
The Bluebirds hit a couple of buckets in the waning moments of the second to remain in the game, down 29-21 at the half.
Following the pattern they have established this year, Melbourne used a strong third period as a springboard to victory.
Levi Taylor (eight points) dropped in a layup, and Hoskinds hit a pair of free throws to push Melbourne in front 33-21 to start the third.
A trey from Jesse Love (13 points) gave the Bluebirds their first score of the frame, but after Jordan Davidson (15 points) canned two treys in a row, and Hoskinds busted his third of the game, the Bearkatz were the owners of a 42-26 advantage.
McFarland closed the frame for Melbourne with five straight points to give the Bearkatz a 52-34 lead after three.
The Bluebirds fought back in the last period, but Melbourne's lead was too big for them to overtake.
Hoskinds' last trey of the game, at the 1:43 mark, put the Bearkatz up 73-45 on their way to a final of 77-45.
