France, Fetherston continue at sea

Thursday, February 20, 2003

Navy Seaman Jesse O. France Jr., son of Jesse O. France Sr. of Cherokee Village, and Navy Lt. Robert D. Fetherston, whose wife, Pamela, is the daughter of Donna and Robert Turner of Cherokee Village, are currently on their fifth month of deployment while assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau, based in Norfolk, Va.

France and Fetherston are two of more than 4,000 Atlantic Fleet sailors and Marines deployed aboard the ships of the USS Nassau Amphibious Ready Group.

During this deployment, Fetherston's ship supported the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and participated in training, humanitarian assistance and peace support operations in Spain, Italy, Kosovo, Kenya and Djibouti, Africa, before patrolling the seas and skies in the U.S. Forces Central Command area of responsibility.

USS Nassau supports amphibious operations using Landing Craft Air Cushions, which are specially-designed Hovercraft that deliver vehicles and equipment to the beach. The ship also has conventional landing craft and helicopters embarked, and is equipped with medical facilities staffed by Navy doctors, dentists, nurses and corpsmen.

France is a 2000 graduate of Highland High School and joined the Navy in April 2001.
