THAYER -- Officials with the Southwest Missouri Office on aging recently announced the hiring of Sheila Smith for the director position at Fun and Friends senior Center and Sue Scott as her assistant.
Smith, a life-long resident of Thayer, attended Thayer High School. She is married to Bob Smith and the couple have two children, Nikki Clark and Roy Smith. They have one grandchild, Aleasha Clark, 6.
Smith said she is excited about her new position and will be focusing on the meal program. She reminds city and surrounding residents that the program is not just for low-income residents but for everyone. She also said the center, as always, is in need of volunteers. She said the longest homebound meal route would take only an hour or so of an individual's time each day and the rewards of helping someone in need are great.
"We are planing several fund raisers in the near future including candy sales when Ina Lou (Clark) is feeling a little bit better and the guys at the center are hoping to organize a checker-chess tournament," the new director said. She said the bridge players are always looking for more players and all are welcome.
"We want to see more seniors enjoying our center. We want to see people in here until 4 p.m.," Smith said.
Scott began her job at the center Feb. 10. She is also a Thayer native and attended Thayer High School. She is married to Larry Scott and the couple have two children, Sarah Blankenship and Lauren Scott. They have three grandchildren, Elly, Anna and Amy.
Scott's duties at the center will be assisting Smith with the meal program, helping print out meal routes and count the daily meals served on routes and in the kitchen.
