Fraley takes home top award

Thursday, May 2, 2002

THAYER -- The Missouri FFA Association has selected Luke Fraley as the 2002 state winner in home and/or community development. Fraley is a member of the Thayer R-II FFA Chapter. His parents are Rolla and Dana Fraley, and his FFA advisor is Dean Vandergriff.

Home and/or community development typically involves improving and protecting the beauty of an area by using natural vegetation or commercial ornamental plants and/or modernizing the home for better health and comfort through the installation or improvement of water and sanitary facilities, heating and air conditioning or labor saving services. It includes community development activities such as volunteerism and community betterment activities.

Fraley was one of 49 students chosen as a state agriculture proficiency award winner. He serves as a positive role model for other students pursuing a career in agriculture, food and natural resources. As an FFA member, Fraley's supervised agricultural experience program (SAE) consisted of entrepreneurial and work-based learning experience supervised by his agriculture advisor. Fraley's SAE included constructing flower beds, planting shrubs and trees, installing a wooden yard fence, placing a cattle guard at the end of his driveway and graveling the driveway. He was responsible for maintaining the yard and equipment. Fraley helped level the ground so his family could have an above-ground swimming pool. He worked with his father on a building for his woodworking equipment and tractor.

Fraley has attended national convention, the Washington Leadership Conference, Made for Excellence Conference and state convention. He has received his state farmer degree, competed at the state level in livestock judging and represented his chapter as a state delegate.

Outside of FFA he is active in the Junior Angus Association, Heart of the Ozarks Angus Association Fall Sale, Beta Booth at the Thayer Fall Festival, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and Spanish Club.

The home and/or community development proficiency award is sponsored by the MO AG Industries Council.
