The Viola City Council approved the purchase of a new Dodge pickup truck for the water department at its council meeting April 25.
The city will purchase the truck through the state purchasing contract for approximately $13,500. The older 1999 model currently in use will be advertised for sale upon delivery of the new truck.
Mayor Jackie Estes brought the council up to date on the grant for the city park. Estes said he hopes the contract with the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism will be signed the first week in May.
Estes told the council that new signs for City Hall, the fire department and library had been purchased and installed. A new 40-foot flagpole has been ordered and should be installed in the near future.
Councilman Bill Boone, who served on the council for 20 years, died last week. Council members recalled Boone was civic minded and helped many elderly and sick people with errands and yard chores.
The final action of the council was to set the annual spring cleanup for May 11. City residents are asked to place items for the cleanup on the curb by 8:30 a.m. Hazardous materials, including car batteries and tires, will not be collected. Refrigerators and freezers will not be picked up if the compressor is still attached. Freon must be removed before the unit can be picked up.
