Two charged with cooking meth

Thursday, January 30, 2003

THAYER -- The attempted cooking of methamphetamine led to the arrest of man and a woman recently according to Oregon County Sheriff Tim Ward.

Ward said residents of a downstairs apartment at the Thayer Apartments notified Thayer Police of a strange, strong odor coming from the apartment upstairs in the early morning hours of Jan. 15, causing the local police and his office as well as the officers with the Southcentral Drug Task Force to investigate.

Ward said Joseph Beard, 19, Mountain Home, Ark., and Terri Beard, 22, of Thayer were attempting to cook or manufacture methamphetamine in the apartment directly above the downstairs apartment, turning on an exhaust fan, causing the smell of the chemicals to flow directly into the downstairs apartment, according to authorities.

The sheriff said both were arrested and each charged with manufacture of methamphetamine and felony assault. Ward said the assault charges were filed due to the residents of the downstairs apartment having to be taken to Ozark Medical Center in West Plains after they became ill while the Beards were cooking the meth in the upstairs apartment.

Ward said the officers were called to the apartment at 5:15 a.m. and, upon entering the apartment, found a strong chemical odor. Ward said residents from three separate apartments rwere contacted to see about their well being due to the meth cooking incident.

Both suspects are being held in the Oregon County jail with bond for each set at $60,000.
